Maintenance

  • Biomass boilers should be kept clean by emptying regularly to remove ash. If there is no automatic ash cleaning mechanism in place the boiler will need to be shut down so that this can be done by hand.
  • Ash quantities are generally very low (less 1% of fuel volume), but you will still need to empty the ash bin. This may be weekly but never more than once a day.
  • Some Biomass boilers, have self-cleaning systems which will collect ash.
  • If the ash is not cleaned out regularly, it can lead to boiler failure and shut down.
  • Annual maintenance check.

Chips, pellets or logs?

Chips, pellets or logs?

  • Chips
    • Are used to heat larger properties or district heating.
  • Pellets
    • Aare much easier to use and much more manageable than logs.
    • Pellet boilers can run automatically in much the same way traditional boilers.
    • Most pellet and chip boilers have the option to use automatic fuel feeders which refill on demand.
  • Logs
    • Log boilers have to be filled with wood by hand, they require significantly more work.
    • You will need a readily available amount of dry logs to heat the property, but they can be more economical to buy than pellets if you have a good local supply.
